How gold gains are taxed

  • The Income Tax Law treats gains from selling or transferring property as income. The gain is the sale price minus what you paid, and it is taxed with your other income at 5% (to Rp60 million), 15%, 25%, 30% and 35% (above Rp5 billion). There's no holding-period relief or separate capital gains rate.
  • 2025 rules (PMK 51/2025 and 52/2025, from 1 August 2025): licensed bullion institutions became PPh 22 collectors. When they buy gold bars, they collect 0.25% of the price (excluding VAT); sales of up to Rp10 million are exempt as retail. The rate bullion institutions applied was cut from 1.5%, and double collection under the old rules was removed.
  • PPh 22 is a prepayment, not a final tax: it is credited against the income tax in your annual return.
  • Buying: consumers aren't charged PPh 22 when they buy gold bars or jewellery from a dealer or bullion bank.

Reporting

  • Report the gain in your annual return (SPT Tahunan), due 31 March of the following year, and claim any PPh 22 collected.
  • Gold you still hold is listed under assets (harta) with the year and cost of acquisition. Gold held but not sold isn't taxed.

Losses

  • We found no rule letting a private loss on gold reduce other income; loss carry-forward is a business rule.
The DJP's own explanations of gold gains are articles and replies from its staff and Kring Pajak account, not formal rulings. The Antam buyback rate comes from press reports, not a DJP source.

Tax on Selling Gold in Indonesia: FAQ

Is selling gold taxed in Indonesia?

Yes. The gain (sale price minus purchase cost) is income and is taxed with your other income at 5% to 35%. It's reported in your annual SPT.

Do I pay 0.25% tax when I sell gold to Pegadaian?

Only if the sale is over Rp10 million. The bullion institution then collects 0.25% of the price as PPh 22, which you can credit against your annual income tax.

Do I need to report gold in my SPT?

Yes. Gold you own is listed as an asset with its year and cost of acquisition, even if you didn't sell it. Holding it isn't taxed.
