How gold is priced in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands gold is quoted in euros per gram and per ounce, and jewellery is mostly 14 karaat (585). The figures here are the international spot price converted at today's EUR/USD rate — the metal value before dealer premiums and, for jewellery, 21% VAT.
VAT and box 3
Investment gold is VAT-free in the Netherlands under the EU VAT Directive: bars of at least 995 fineness and qualifying gold coins. Jewellery carries 21% VAT.
There is no separate capital gains tax. Instead, gold held as an investment counts as an "other asset" in box 3, which taxes a deemed return: for 2026 the deemed return on other assets is 6.00%, taxed at 36%, on wealth above the tax-free allowance of €59,357 per person. Jewellery for personal use generally falls outside box 3.
Dutch gold coins
The gouden tientje, the 10-guilder coin last struck in 1933, weighs 6.72 g of 900 gold and contains about 6.05 g of pure gold; it is the classic Dutch gold coin. The gouden dukaat is a trade coin still struck by the Royal Dutch Mint: 3.494 g of 983 gold, or about 3.43 g of pure gold. Dealers also sell Krugerrands, Philharmonics and bars. De Nederlandsche Bank holds about 612 tonnes of gold.
Hallmarking
Gold articles sold in the Netherlands must be hallmarked by one of the two Dutch assay offices, WaarborgHolland and Edelmetaal Waarborg Nederland, whose marks carry the initials WH and EWN. The legal standards for gold are 585 (14 karaat), 750 (18 karaat), 833 (20 karaat) and 916 (22 karaat). Bullion bars are 999.9 fine.
