How gold is priced in Egypt
21K is the benchmark karat in Egypt, quoted in pounds per gram, alongside 24K and 18K. The prices here are international spot converted at today's USD/EGP rate; local shop prices can differ, especially when the currency is under pressure.
Local price vs. world price
Prices are set by the trade through the Gold Division of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. During the 2023 currency crisis local prices traded far above world parity at the official exchange rate (around 50% in May 2023); the gap largely closed after the March 2024 float and was small (about 3%) in mid-2026.
Making charges and tax
VAT of 14% is charged on the making charge (masna'eya), not on the gold itself, and is collected when the piece is hallmarked. The Tax Authority raises its reference making charges by 10% each July. Bars and coins have much lower making charges. A separate hallmarking (damgha) fee also applies.
The gold pound
The Egyptian gold pound (geneih dahab) contains 8 grams of 21K gold (7 g of pure gold) and is priced at about 8 × the 21K gram price plus a small premium. Bars and coins have recently outsold jewellery as Egyptians buy gold as savings.
