How gold is priced in Nepal
Nepal prices gold per tola (11.664 g) and per 10 grams, for fine gold (chhapawal, stamped 24K bullion) and tejabi gold, which trades slightly below it. The figures here are the international spot price converted to rupees, before customs duty and fees, so the Nepali market rate is considerably higher.
Who sets the daily rate
The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association (FENEGOSIDA) publishes the official daily buying and selling rates each morning for fine gold, tejabi gold and silver, per tola and per 10 grams. Shops then add making charges (jyala) and any wastage on jewellery.
Imports, quota and customs duty
Gold can be imported only through commercial banks authorised by Nepal Rastra Bank, within a daily quota that was raised from 20 kg to 25 kg a day in October 2025. The 2026/27 budget, presented on 29 May 2026, doubled customs duty on gold from 10% to 20%, removed the 2% luxury fee and added a 0.5% skill promotion fee on gold purchases; the local price jumped by about Rs 20,500 per tola on the next trading day.
Buying gold in Nepal
Demand peaks during the wedding season and around Dashain and Tihar, when Dhanteras is an auspicious day to buy. Ask for the purity, weight and making charge to be written on your bill, and compare the FENEGOSIDA rate with the live spot value here: the gap is mostly customs duty.
