Why gold costs more in some countries

Gold is priced in US dollars on world markets, so an ounce costs the same everywhere before local costs. Three things change what you pay:

Import duty. A few countries tax gold coming in, which lifts the whole local market price — India is the biggest example. VAT, GST or sales tax. Most countries exempt investment-grade bars and coins (usually 99.5% pure or more) but tax jewellery in full. Premiums and charges. Dealers add a premium to bars and coins, and jewellers add making charges, which often matter more than tax.

Some markets also trade at their own price: when demand outruns legal supply, the local price can sit well above the world price (or below it, when buyers hold back).

Where Is Gold Cheapest? FAQ

Where is gold cheapest in the world?

Before dealer premiums, gold bars and coins cost the same world price — $4,009.83 an ounce today — in every country that charges no tax or duty on investment gold: UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, UK, United States, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Canada, Australia and 18 more. Differences between those places come from dealers' premiums and exchange-rate spreads, which are usually a few percent. Jewellery is a different story: VAT and making charges vary a lot (see the jewellery column).

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?

Yes, mainly because of India's 15% import duty plus 3% GST. Today 10 grams of 24K gold costs about ₹1,45,315 in India (market rate with duty and GST) against ₹1,22,680 for a 24K bar in Dubai (no VAT on investment gold) — 15.6% less. Jewellery in Dubai pays 5% VAT (tourists can claim most of it back), so the metal in 24K jewellery costs about 11.4% less than in India, before making charges. Bringing it home is limited by India's duty-free allowance: see how much gold you can bring to India.

Why is gold so expensive in India?

Because India adds 15% import duty plus 3% GST to the world price, so gold in India costs about 18.5% more than the world price before making charges.

Which countries charge VAT or sales tax on gold bars?

Of the countries here: Nepal +20.6%; Ghana +20%; Colombia +19%; India +18.5%; Kenya +16%; Philippines +12%; South Korea +10%; Japan +10%; Nigeria +7.5%; Bangladesh +3%; Brazil +1% (tax and import duty combined, on the world price).

Does this include the dealer premium or making charges?

No. The table shows the price of the gold content with taxes and duty only. Dealers sell bars and coins at a premium over spot (often 1–5% for bars, more for small coins), and jewellers add making charges (often 5–25%). Compare those locally before you buy.

Can tourists get the VAT on gold jewellery back?

In 18 of these countries: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Singapore, Japan, China, South Korea, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Switzerland, Australia, South Africa, Mexico and Colombia. Not in Oman, UK, United States, Canada, Peru, Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya and 1 more. Schemes usually need a minimum spend at one shop, a tax-free form from the seller and the goods in your luggage when you leave, and operators keep a fee. In the UAE, for example, the refund is the 5% VAT less 13% and a small fee per invoice. Investment gold usually has no VAT to refund.

Sources for each country's taxes and duty are listed in the table data (tax authorities, customs notices and major accounting firms), reviewed October 2026. Rules change: check with the seller or customs before you buy. Not tax or investment advice.
