Buying gold in Chennai
In Chennai and across Tamil Nadu gold is counted in sovereigns (pavan) of 8 grams, and 22K is the standard for jewellery. Tamil Nadu is one of India's largest gold-buying states.
The prices on this page are India's spot-based rate in INR: there is no separate exchange price for Chennai. Taxes and duties are explained on the gold price in India page.
Sovereign and gram rates
Chennai jewellers display the 22K rate per gram and per sovereign every morning. One sovereign is exactly 8 grams, so the sovereign rate is the gram rate × 8. The table below also shows tola and 10-gram prices.
Why Chennai prices differ from spot
Every Indian city starts from the same international price, converted to rupees and raised by the same 15% import duty and 3% GST. City rates then differ by small amounts — usually less than ₹100 per gram — because of transport and insurance from the port of entry, local jewellers' association rates, how much stock dealers hold and how hard they compete. The biggest difference between two shops is the making charge, typically 5% to 25% of the gold value for 22K jewellery.
Chennai is a port city with its own airport cargo hub, so transport costs are low and its rate is usually close to Mumbai's.
Where Chennai buys gold
T. Nagar (Thyagaraya Nagar) has the city's biggest concentration of jewellery showrooms. Demand peaks on Akshaya Tritiya, around Diwali and in the wedding months.
