Buying gold in Kerala
Kerala is one of India's largest gold markets for its size. Gold is counted in pavan (sovereign) of 8 grams, 22K is the standard, and jewellers across the state display a common daily board rate per gram and per pavan.
The prices on this page are India's spot-based rate in INR: there is no separate exchange price for Kerala. Taxes and duties are explained on the gold price in India page.
The daily Kerala rate
The Kerala rate is set each morning from the international price and the rupee, and is often revised during the day when the world price moves sharply. Because it is shared by jewellers across the state, it is the same in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Thrissur.
Why Kerala prices differ from spot
Every Indian city starts from the same international price, converted to rupees and raised by the same 15% import duty and 3% GST. City rates then differ by small amounts — usually less than ₹100 per gram — because of transport and insurance from the port of entry, local jewellers' association rates, how much stock dealers hold and how hard they compete. The biggest difference between two shops is the making charge, typically 5% to 25% of the gold value for 22K jewellery.
On a bill in Kerala you will also see a small hallmarking fee per piece (₹45 plus GST in 2025) in addition to making charges.
Gold and the Gulf
Many Kerala families have members working in the Gulf, and gold bought in Dubai or elsewhere in the GCC is a common comparison. See the gold rate in Dubai for the difference — and check India's customs allowance before bringing jewellery home.
