Buying gold in Kolkata
Kolkata quotes gold per 10 grams for 24K and 22K, and per gram at the counter. The city is famous for its goldsmiths: Bengali karigars craft jewellery for workshops across India.
The prices on this page are India's spot-based rate in INR: there is no separate exchange price for Kolkata. Taxes and duties are explained on the gold price in India page.
Why Kolkata prices differ from spot
Every Indian city starts from the same international price, converted to rupees and raised by the same 15% import duty and 3% GST. City rates then differ by small amounts — usually less than ₹100 per gram — because of transport and insurance from the port of entry, local jewellers' association rates, how much stock dealers hold and how hard they compete. The biggest difference between two shops is the making charge, typically 5% to 25% of the gold value for 22K jewellery.
Where Kolkata buys gold
Bowbazar is the city's traditional jewellery market, alongside the showrooms of national chains. Fine, lightweight Bengali designs mean making charges can be a larger share of the price, so ask for them separately on the bill.
When Kolkata buys gold
Akshaya Tritiya, Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year), the Durga Puja and Diwali season, and the wedding months are the busiest periods for Kolkata jewellers.
