Tax on Selling Gold in Egypt

Egypt doesn't tax individuals on gains from selling their own gold: income tax covers set categories of income, and capital gains tax applies to securities, not personal belongings. Selling your jewellery, bars or coins is therefore untaxed, and the gold trade division said in August 2025 that there is no resale tax on gold. Buying jewellery carries 14% VAT on the making charge.

How gold gains are taxed

  • Egypt's income tax law taxes individuals on specific categories of income, such as salaries, business and professional income. Capital gains tax for individuals applies to shares and other securities (10% on EGX-listed shares for residents). Gold and other personal belongings aren't in any taxable category, so a private sale is untaxed.
  • In August 2025 the General Division for Gold and Jewelry said there is "no such thing as a resale tax" on gold, after reports of traders charging customers 1% to 3%.
  • If you buy and sell gold as a trade, the profit is business income taxed at progressive rates up to 27.5%.
  • When you buy jewellery, VAT of 14% is charged on the making charge only, not on the value of the gold. The Tax Authority's average making charges for gold, silver and platinum jewellery were raised by 10% for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

Reporting

  • Nothing to report for a private sale of your own gold.
  • Gold traders register for tax and declare profits as business income.

Losses

  • Losses on private gold sales can't be used, since the gains aren't taxed.
These points come from secondary sources: Egypt's Tax Authority hasn't published guidance on individuals selling gold, and the no-tax position rests on gold not falling within any taxable income category. Gold funds and other listed gold products may follow the securities rules and aren't covered here.
