What it's worth
| Offer | You get | Buyer keeps |

Bullion dealers often pay near the spot price for well-known bars and coins; jewellers and scrap buyers usually pay a lower percentage. Compare quotes and check the weight and purity test yourself.
Before you sell
- Check today's rate for your karat: gold price per gram by karat.
- Ask for the weight and purity test in front of you (an XRF "karat meter" is quick and doesn't damage the piece) and for the deductions in writing.
- Get two or three quotes. Offers for the same piece can differ a lot.
- Bring ID and your receipts; dealers in many countries must identify sellers, and large cash payments are restricted (in India no one may receive ₹2 lakh or more in cash for one transaction).
- Exchanging for new jewellery? Compare the exchange value with a cash offer; exchange deals often look generous because the new piece carries making charges.

Selling Gold: FAQ
How much will I get for my old gold?
Start from the melt value: weight × purity × today's gold price. Today that is about $118.30 per gram of 22K gold and $75.55 per gram of 14K. Buyers then pay a percentage of it: bullion dealers often pay close to the spot price for well-known bars and coins, while jewellery and scrap usually fetch noticeably less because it has to be tested and refined. Get several quotes and have the gold weighed and tested in front of you.
Do I get the making charges back when I sell jewellery?
No. Making charges, stones (unless the buyer values them separately) and GST or VAT are not refunded: buyers pay for the gold content, sometimes less a deduction for melting and refining. That is why jewellery bought last year can be worth less than you paid even if the gold price has risen.
What does 916 or 22K mean for the value?
916 means 91.6% gold, which is 22 karat. A 10-gram 22K chain contains 9.16 grams of pure gold, and its melt value is 9.16 × the price of a gram of pure gold.
Why is the Indian price higher here than the international price?
India's market rate includes the 15% import duty on gold, and Indian jewellers buy back at a rate based on it (before GST). Tick "India market rate" to include it.
Melt value = weight × fineness × today's international gold price, converted at today's exchange rate. Local market rates can sit above or below it (India's includes import duty). Not financial advice.
