MCX Holiday List

MCX publishes each year's list in December. On most festival holidays only the morning session (9 am to 5 pm) is closed and gold trades in the evening. The 2027 dates are the central government's weekday holidays with MCX's usual pattern, until MCX publishes its list.

MCX hours and Muhurat trading

MCX trades gold and silver Monday to Friday in a morning session (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) and an evening session (5:00 pm to the close). The close is 11:55 pm while the US is on winter time (from 2 November 2026) and 11:30 pm while the US is on daylight saving time (expected from about 15 March 2027; MCX confirms by circular).

On Diwali, Sunday 8 November 2026, MCX holds a one-hour Muhurat trading session: trading from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm IST. On Balipratipada (10 Nov) and Guru Nanak Jayanti (24 Nov) only the morning session is closed; Christmas is a full holiday.

IBJA rates, duty and the Budget

The India Bullion and Jewellers Association publishes benchmark rates around noon and 5 pm on business days, from dealer polls taken ten minutes earlier. There are no IBJA rates on Saturdays, Sundays or government holidays; Friday's rate is used over the weekend.

The IBJA rate includes import duty but not 3% GST. Duty was raised from 6% to 15% in May 2026. Duty changes often come with the Union Budget, expected on 1 February 2027, so the weeks around it can bring big moves in the Indian price.

Change in the international gold price in rupees over the 30 days up to each festival, every year since 2004. Gold rose in most 30-day spells over this period anyway, so a rise before a festival is not proof that festival buying moved the world price; local demand shows up more in dealer premiums and discounts. Each festival page has the year-by-year prices.

Does the gold price rise before Dhanteras?

Not reliably. Over the 22 years in our data, gold in rupees rose in the 30 days before Dhanteras in 16 of them, by +1.5% on average (median +1.0%). Gold's long upward trend accounts for much of that, so a typical month shows a rise too. Not reliably. Over the 23 years in our data, gold in rupees rose in the 30 days before Akshaya Tritiya in 14 of them, by +1.9% on average (median +1.3%). Gold's long upward trend accounts for much of that, so a typical month shows a rise too.
