Change in the gold futures closing price from the previous trading day ("2 days" = to the next day's close). COMEX gold settles at 1:30 pm ET, before the 2:00 pm Fed statement, so for Fed decisions the 2-day figure is the one that captures the reaction. Releases move gold through expectations and surprises; one day's move also reflects everything else that happened.
Does Gold Move More on These Days?
Average size of gold's move (up or down) on release days since 2023, against ordinary days. Fed decisions are measured over two sessions — the decision day and the next — because COMEX settles before the 2:00 pm statement, and compared with ordinary two-day moves.
FOMC interest-rate decision
Interest rates are the main opportunity cost of holding gold, which pays no interest. Higher or "higher for longer" rates tend to weigh on gold; cuts or dovish guidance tend to support it. The statement is at 2:00 pm ET and the Chair's press conference follows at 2:30 pm.

Biggest gold move around a Fed decision since 2023: −8.0% on Mar 18, 2026.
US Consumer Price Index (CPI)
Inflation drives expectations for Fed policy. A hotter-than-expected CPI can push yields and the dollar up and gold down in the short run, even though gold is seen as a long-term inflation hedge.

Biggest gold move on a CPI inflation day since 2023: −3.6% on Jun 10, 2026.
US Employment Situation (nonfarm payrolls)
Payrolls and the unemployment rate shape how far and how fast the Fed moves. Strong hiring tends to lift yields and the dollar; weak data tends to help gold. It is usually released on the first Friday of the month.

Biggest gold move on a Jobs report day since 2023: +3.2% on Aug 1, 2025.
US Personal Income & Outlays (PCE price index)
The PCE price index is the Fed's preferred inflation measure. It usually moves markets less than CPI because much of it can be estimated from CPI and PPI, but surprises still matter.

How does gold react to Fed decisions?
Since 2023, gold has moved 1.65% on average (up or down) from the close before a Fed decision to the close the day after, compared with 1.26% over ordinary two-day periods, and was higher after 19 of 30 decisions. The reaction depends on the surprise versus expectations and on the Chair's guidance, not on the decision alone.
Why does this calendar matter for gold?
Gold pays no interest, so its price is sensitive to interest-rate expectations, the US dollar and real yields. Fed decisions and the inflation and jobs data that feed into them are the scheduled events most likely to move those, and gold can move sharply when a release surprises the market. On average, though, the size of the move depends far more on the surprise than on the event itself — see the figures on this page.
Where do these dates come from?
From the official schedules of the Federal Reserve, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Dates can change (for example during a government shutdown); we update the calendar when they do.
