How gold is priced in Türkiye
Turks track gold as gram altın (24K, priced per gram) and in Cumhuriyet coins — çeyrek, yarım and tam — which are 22K. The prices here are international spot converted at today's USD/TRY rate; Grand Bazaar prices usually sit a few percent higher.
Why Turkish prices are above world prices
Since 2023 Türkiye has limited gold imports with a quota, so local prices carry a premium over international prices — typically around 3–5% in early 2026, according to the Istanbul Jewellery Chamber. Reference prices come from Borsa Istanbul and the Kapalıçarşı (Grand Bazaar) free market.
Cumhuriyet coins
All Cumhuriyet coins are 22K. The jewellery (ziynet) versions weigh 1.754 g (çeyrek), 3.508 g (yarım) and 7.016 g (tam); the sikke versions are slightly heavier, and the "Ata" full coin weighs 7.216 g. The coin table above shows the value of the gold each contains; coins trade with a small premium on top.
Taxes
Gold bullion (külçe) is exempt from KDV (VAT). For jewellery and Cumhuriyet coins, KDV is charged only on the part of the price above the gold value. Buying "bank gold" without physical delivery carries a 0.2% BSMV levy (since March 2025); buying physical gold from a jeweller does not.
