Travelling With Gold Within Your Country

Within your own country there is no customs limit on gold, and airport security allows jewellery and bullion in hand luggage. The risks are elsewhere: airlines exclude jewellery and precious metals from checked-bag liability, hotels can limit what they owe you (to just £100 in total in the UK) unless you hand valuables to the front desk, and in India large undocumented amounts can be passed to the Income Tax Department. Carry gold in your hand luggage, with receipts, and check your insurance covers it away from home. Crossing a border? See the gold travel allowance by country.

Gold on domestic flights: the rules

CountryAirport securityAirline liability for checked bagsWorth knowing
United StatesTSA allows jewellery in carry-on and checked bags, but says to keep valuable jewellery with you and not in checked bags. You can ask for private screening of you and your valuables. At least $4,700 per passenger on domestic flights (since January 2025), but airlines such as American exclude jewellery, precious metals and money, and won't sell extra cover for them.Carrying large amounts of cash is legal. TSA must alert law enforcement only if currency appears to exceed $10,000 on a trip leaving the US, or appears linked to crime.
United KingdomGOV.UK's hand-luggage rules don't restrict jewellery or precious metals; security staff can refuse anything they consider dangerous.British Airways: you must not pack money, jewellery or precious metals in checked baggage, and it isn't liable for them beyond what the Montreal Convention requires.Domestic hotels: see the Hotel Proprietors Act below.
IndiaJewellery can be carried; CISF airport security hands passengers with large unaccounted cash to the Income Tax Department (for example ₹68.5 lakh at Delhi airport in August 2026), and in 2016–17 reported detecting 1,491 kg of gold at airports.Domestic liability is ₹350 per kg, up to ₹25,000 (Ministry of Civil Aviation notification of 2019, used by IndiGo and Air India) unless you declare a higher value. Air India bars jewellery and precious metals from checked bags; IndiGo says they travel at your own risk. There is no limit on owning or carrying jewellery from explained sources; carry the bill or proof of inheritance. See the CBDT guidance below.
CanadaJewellery is not a restricted item (CATSA's own page was not reviewed).Domestic baggage liability follows the Montreal Convention limit, 1,519 SDR (about US$2,000), under the Air Passenger Protection Regulations.Montreal Convention limits apply to international trips in every country that has ratified it, including Australia.
1,519 Special Drawing Rights is the Montreal Convention baggage limit from 28 December 2024. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Australian domestic rules were not reviewed for this page.

Why gold goes in your hand luggage

Airlines' conditions of carriage almost all exclude jewellery, precious metals and money from their liability for checked bags. American Airlines won't sell excess valuation for them; British Airways and Air India tell you not to pack them in checked bags at all; IndiGo says they travel at your own risk. Even where an airline is liable, the cap is low: ₹25,000 on an Indian domestic flight, $4,700 in the US.

At security, gold shows up on the X-ray. In the US you can ask the officer for a private screening.

India: how much gold can you carry?

There is no legal limit on how much gold jewellery you may own or carry within India. The often-quoted 500 g / 250 g / 100 g figures come from CBDT Instruction 1916 (1994): they are the amounts per married woman, unmarried woman and man that income tax officers need not seize during a tax search. In December 2016 the Finance Ministry restated them and said "there is no limit on holding of gold jewellery or ornaments by anybody, provided it is acquired from explained sources of income including inheritance". Courts have differed on how far the figures protect you, and the Income-tax Act, 2025 has renumbered the search powers.

So carry the purchase invoice (or a family record for inherited jewellery). Separately, nobody may receive ₹2 lakh or more in cash for one transaction or in one day from one person (section 186 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, formerly 269ST), so large gold purchases are paid by bank transfer or card. Kerala requires an e-way bill for traders moving gold worth ₹10 lakh or more within the state.

Hotel safes: what a hotel owes you

WhereThe ruleWhat it means
United KingdomHotel Proprietors Act 1956, s.2(3): liability capped at £50 per item and £100 in total, if the hotel displays the statutory notice near reception. The cap does not apply if you deposited the items expressly for safe custody with the hotel, if the hotel refused to take them, or if staff were at fault.
New YorkGeneral Business Law §200: if the hotel provides a safe and posts a notice, it isn't liable for jewels or money you don't deposit; it need not accept more than $1,500, and its liability is capped at $1,500 unless agreed in writing.A court has held that in-room safes can count, but the hotel must prove it met every requirement, including the notice.
Rhode IslandR.I. Gen. Laws §5-14-1: the same approach with a $500 limit.Other US states have their own innkeeper laws and limits.
Handing valuables to the front desk for safe custody usually gives you more protection than the in-room safe. Ask for a receipt.

A checklist for travelling with gold

  1. Carry it in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag, and keep it on you rather than in an overhead locker you can't see.
  2. Carry proof of purchase or ownership: invoices (in India, the GST invoice), certificates, or a record of inheritance. Photograph pieces before you go.
  3. Don't advertise it. Wear less on the journey, use plain bags and pouches, and avoid posting photos of jewellery while you are away.
  4. Ask for private screening if you are carrying a lot (US: you can request it from the TSA officer).
  5. Use the hotel's front-desk deposit for valuable items and get a receipt; the in-room safe may leave the hotel's liability capped.
  6. Check your insurance away from home (below) before you go.
  7. Pay for gold by bank transfer or card if you buy while travelling; in India cash receipts of ₹2 lakh or more are banned.

Is gold insured while you travel?

Often only partly. The standard US homeowners form limits property usually kept elsewhere to 10% of your contents cover or $1,000, and its $200 bullion and $1,500 jewellery-theft limits still apply. Scheduled items (a jewellery floater) are usually covered worldwide. In the UK, cover away from home is often an add-on ("personal possessions"), with its own limits; first direct's policy, for example, covers £5,000 for items temporarily removed from the home. In India, Royal Sundaram's jewellery cover is India-only, except snatching of jewellery being worn, which is covered worldwide. See insuring gold at home for how the limits work.

Travelling With Gold: FAQ

Can I carry gold in my hand luggage on a domestic flight?

Yes. Security in the US, UK, India and Canada allows jewellery and precious metals in hand luggage, and the TSA recommends keeping valuable jewellery with you rather than in checked bags. There's no customs limit on domestic flights.

How much gold can I carry on a domestic flight in India?

There is no legal limit, but carry proof of where it came from. The 500 g (married woman), 250 g (unmarried woman) and 100 g (man) figures are the amounts income tax officers need not seize in a tax search under CBDT Instruction 1916; the Finance Ministry says there is no limit on holding jewellery from explained income. Airport security passes large unaccounted cash and valuables to the Income Tax Department.

Will the airline pay if gold is lost from my checked bag?

Usually not. American Airlines, British Airways, Air India and IndiGo all exclude or bar jewellery and precious metals in checked baggage. Even where liability applies, it is capped: ₹25,000 on Indian domestic flights, $4,700 on US domestic flights and 1,519 SDR under the Montreal Convention.

Is a hotel responsible for jewellery stolen from my room?

Often only up to a low limit unless you deposited it with the hotel. In the UK the Hotel Proprietors Act caps liability at £50 an item and £100 in total if the notice is displayed; in New York the cap is $1,500 for items in the hotel safe. Hand valuables to the front desk for safe custody and get a receipt.

Does TSA report gold or cash?

Carrying large amounts of cash or valuables is legal. TSA's procedures require officers to alert law enforcement if currency appears to exceed $10,000 on a trip leaving the US, or appears to relate to criminal activity.
