How gold is priced in Hong Kong
Hong Kong gold is priced per tael (leung) — 37.429 grams, about 1.2 troy ounces — and per gram. The prices here are for 999.9 gold; under Hong Kong's marking rules, 足金 means at least 99.0% gold and 千足金 at least 99.9%. The HKD trades in a narrow band against the US dollar.
No sales tax, no duty
Hong Kong charges no VAT, GST or sales tax on gold and no customs duty — import and export controls were lifted in 1974. That makes it a major channel for gold flowing into mainland China.
Hong Kong Gold Exchange
The Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society was renamed the Hong Kong Gold Exchange (HKGX) and has operated under that name since January 2025. It publishes settlement prices for "99 Tael Gold" twice each weekday. In July 2026 a government-owned central gold clearing system began trial operations, with plans to expand vault capacity substantially.
Buying gold
Jewellers quote a daily price per tael and per gram (often for 足金 jewellery) and add labour charges. Popular bullion includes five-tael bars stamped by HKGX-accredited refiners, kilobars and LBMA bars.
