How gold is priced in Colombia
In Colombia gold is priced per gram, mostly 18K for jewellery and 24K for bars, and miners still trade in the traditional castellano (4.6 g). The figures here are the international spot price converted at today's USD/COP rate — the metal value before IVA, workmanship and the dealer's margin.
IVA on gold
The DIAN treats the sale of gold as a taxable sale of goods: there is no general IVA exemption for minerals, and gold that is exported qualifies as exempt. Jewellery pays the general 19% IVA. Ask a dealer whether IVA is included in the price of bars. Gains on gold held for more than two years are taxed as an occasional gain (ganancia ocasional) at 15%.
Banco de la República and the castellano
The Banco de la República buys domestically produced gold and publishes daily purchase prices derived from the LBMA fix and the exchange rate. Alongside grams, it quotes the old mining units: the castellano (4.6 g), the tomín (0.575 g) and the real (0.287 g). These units are still heard in gold-mining regions such as Antioquia.
Traceability and buying tips
Gold traders and dealers must be registered in RUCOM, the register of mineral traders kept by the Agencia Nacional de Minería, and dealers are subject to anti-money-laundering reporting, so expect identity and source-of-funds questions on large purchases. Ask for the purity (ley 750 for 18K), weight and origin on the invoice. In October 2025 President Petro ordered the Ministry of Mines to start buying gold directly in producing regions.
