FAQ
How is a gold coin's melt value worked out?
Gold content in troy ounces × the spot price. A 1 oz bullion coin such as the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf or American Gold Eagle contains one troy ounce of pure gold whatever its purity, so its melt value is the price of an ounce. Dealers sell bullion coins at a premium over that and buy them back close to it.
Why does a 22-karat coin still contain a full ounce of gold?
Coins such as the Krugerrand, American Gold Eagle and Britannia (before 2013) are made of 22-karat (91.67%) gold alloyed with copper or silver for hardness, so they weigh more than an ounce (about 33.9 g) but contain exactly one troy ounce of pure gold.
Are old gold coins worth more than their gold?
Common dates of sovereigns, US $20 Double Eagles and similar coins trade close to their melt value plus a modest premium. Rare dates, mint marks and coins in exceptional condition can be worth much more to collectors; check a price guide or have them graded before selling.
