How gold gains are taxed

  • Gold is a chargeable asset for CGT. Budget 2027 cut the main rate from 33% to 31% for disposals on or after 7 October 2026; Revenue's guidance already applies it.
  • Each individual has a €1,270 personal exemption a year, and it can't be carried forward.
  • Chattels (tangible movable property) sold for €2,540 or less are exempt (s.602 TCA). Above that, the CGT is capped at half the amount by which the price exceeds €2,540. The exemption doesn't apply to currency or to commodities sold by or through a market dealer.
  • There's no indexation or holding-period discount on gains.

Reporting

  • Pay CGT by 15 December for disposals from January to November, and by 31 January for December disposals.
  • File by 31 October of the following year on Form 11, paper Form 12 or Form CG1, even if no tax is due.

Losses

  • Capital losses offset gains in the same year; unused losses carry forward to later years. They can't be set against income.
  • A chattel sold for under €2,540 at a loss is treated as sold for €2,540.
Whether gold bullion sold through a bullion dealer qualifies for the €2,540 chattels exemption is unclear: the exemption excludes commodities sold by or through a market dealer, and no Revenue guidance on gold bars was found. Jewellery and small personal items are the clearest cases.
