How gold is priced in Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia gold is priced in riyals per gram, and 21K is the reference karat for most jewellery. With the riyal pegged at 3.75 to the dollar, Saudi gram prices move almost one-for-one with international spot.
VAT
Gold jewellery carries the standard 15% VAT on its full price. Investment gold of 99% purity or more is generally zero-rated — confirm the treatment with the seller, since it depends on the product. Imported jewellery typically pays 5% customs duty.
New precious-metals rules
Regulations in force since 11 October 2025 tightened the market: the Ministry of Industry licenses manufacturing, the Ministry of Commerce supervises retail, the old tolerance that allowed pieces to be below their stated karat was removed, and advertisements must state type, weight, purity and price.
Buying tips
Ask for the weight, karat and making charge to be itemised on the invoice, and compare the gram price with the live rate on this page — the difference is the shop's margin and making charge.
