Buying gold in Mumbai
Mumbai is the centre of India's gold trade. Much of the country's imported bullion arrives here, the national benchmark rate is set here, and the gold futures market (MCX) is based here — so the Mumbai rate is the one other cities are usually compared with.
The prices on this page are India's spot-based rate in INR: there is no separate exchange price for Mumbai. Taxes and duties are explained on the gold price in India page.
Where the Mumbai rate comes from
The India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), headquartered in Mumbai, publishes benchmark rates for 999 and 916 gold every trading day; the Reserve Bank of India used them to price Sovereign Gold Bonds. Wholesale dealers in Zaveri Bazaar (Kalbadevi) trade around that rate, and retail jewellers add their making charges on top.
Why Mumbai prices differ from spot
Every Indian city starts from the same international price, converted to rupees and raised by the same 15% import duty and 3% GST. City rates then differ by small amounts — usually less than ₹100 per gram — because of transport and insurance from the port of entry, local jewellers' association rates, how much stock dealers hold and how hard they compete. The biggest difference between two shops is the making charge, typically 5% to 25% of the gold value for 22K jewellery.
Mumbai's rate is often among the lowest in India because bullion lands here and dealers compete closely, but the gap with other metros is small.
When Mumbai buys gold
Demand peaks on Gudi Padwa (the Maharashtrian new year), Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and during the wedding season from November to February. Expect smaller discounts on those days.
