Tax on Selling Gold in Nepal

Nepal taxes gains on land, buildings and shares or securities, not on physical gold. An individual who sells personal gold or jewellery at a gain pays no income tax on it; the tax costs fall on buying, through customs duty and fees.

How gold gains are taxed

  • The Income Tax Act 2058 taxes an individual's investment gains on non-business taxable assets, defined as land, buildings and an interest or security in an entity. Gold, silver and jewellery aren't included.
  • The Act's definition of investment also excludes property held for the owner's personal use, so personal jewellery isn't an investment for tax purposes.
  • Dealing in gold as a business is taxed as business income.
  • Buying costs (2025-2026): the 2025/26 budget applied a 2% luxury tax to all gold and jewellery purchases; the 2026/27 budget (May 2026) dropped it, doubled customs duty on gold imports to 20%, and from mid-July 2026 buyers of gold and silver jewellery pay a 0.5% fee, according to news reports.

Reporting

  • Nothing to report for a private sale of personal gold.
  • Keep purchase bills in case you need to show where sale money came from.

Losses

  • A loss on personal gold gets no tax relief.
These points come from the Inland Revenue Department's unofficial English translation of the Income Tax Act (amended to 2020) and news reports on the 2025/26 and 2026/27 budgets. We found no IRD guidance that mentions gold.
