Gold Charts FAQ
Has gold beaten the S&P 500?
It depends on the period. Since Aug 2000, gold has changed +1,412% and the S&P 500 price index +415%. The S&P 500 figures here exclude dividends, which have added roughly 1.5–2% a year to stock returns; gold pays no income. Use the range buttons on the comparison chart to see any period from one year back to 2000.
What does the gold/silver ratio mean?
It is how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys. A high ratio means silver is cheap relative to gold; a low ratio means it is expensive. Over the past 10 years it has ranged from 44 to 126, averaging 80.8.
Why does gold often move opposite to the dollar?
Gold is priced in US dollars, so a stronger dollar makes it more expensive in other currencies and tends to weigh on the dollar price, and a weaker dollar tends to lift it. The link is loose and breaks down for long stretches, as the comparison chart shows.
