How gold is priced in Poland
In Poland gold is quoted in złoty per ounce for bullion and per gram for jewellery, which is mostly 585 (14K) and 333 (8K). The figures here are spot gold converted at today's USD/PLN rate — the metal value before dealer premiums and, for jewellery, 23% VAT.
VAT and income tax
Investment gold (złoto inwestycyjne) is exempt from VAT under the EU VAT Directive: bars of at least 995 fineness and coins of at least 900 fineness minted after 1800 that are or were legal tender. Jewellery carries 23% VAT.
For private individuals, selling gold is free of income tax if the sale takes place more than six months after the end of the month in which you bought it. A sale within that period is taxed as income at the standard 12%/32% scale. If you buy gold from another private person and its market value is over PLN 1,000, you as the buyer generally owe the 2% civil-law transactions tax (PCC); purchases from VAT-registered dealers are not subject to it. A government draft published in 2026 would raise that threshold to PLN 3,000.
The NBP and the Orzeł Bielik
Narodowy Bank Polski issues the Orzeł Bielik (white-tailed eagle) gold bullion coin, struck in 999.9 gold in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz sizes; the 1 oz coin has a face value of 500 zł. The NBP has been one of the largest buyers of gold among central banks in recent years. Dealers price coins and bars from the international dollar price converted into złoty, so a weaker złoty raises local prices.
Hallmarking
Hallmarking is compulsory in Poland and is done by the state assay offices, with regional offices in Warsaw and Kraków. Polish legal standards for gold are 999, 960, 750, 585, 500, 375 and 333; items under 1 g are exempt. Old gold is bought on its fine gold content, so check the stamp (for example 585) and weigh items before you sell.
