Wedding gold: FAQ

How much gold is given at a wedding?

It depends on the tradition: North Indian about 50–350 g; Kerala about 80–640 g; Pakistani about 47–350 g; Gulf Arab about 50–500 g; Egyptian about 10–100 g; Turkish about 40–300 g; Chinese about 20–120 g; Vietnamese about 15–375 g (modest to lavish sets for the bride, typical ranges rather than rules).

Why is wedding gold so expensive in 2026?

Gold is near record highs, so the same weight costs far more than a few years ago. Many families now buy lighter pieces, lower karats (18K or 14K instead of 22K), or coins and bars that can be resold with less loss. Making charges and taxes add to the metal value.

Is it better to buy wedding gold as jewellery or coins?

Jewellery carries making charges (often 8–25% of the gold value) and sometimes tax that you don't get back when selling; coins and bars cost close to the gold value. Many families buy the pieces the ceremony needs and put the rest in coins or bars.
