US Gold Trade: FAQ
Where does the US export its gold to?
Over the 12 months to August 2026 the largest destinations were Switzerland ($70.1bn, 55%), United Kingdom ($26.5bn, 21%), Hong Kong ($13.7bn, 11%), Singapore ($4.1bn, 3%), out of $128bn in all.
Where does the US import its gold from?
Over the same 12 months the largest sources were Switzerland ($4.2bn, 18%), Mexico ($3.6bn, 15%), Canada ($3.1bn, 13%), Australia ($2.6bn, 11%), out of $23.7bn in all.
Why do US gold imports and exports swing so much?
Most of the value is large bars moving between the big trading centres: London, Switzerland (where bars are refined and recast) and New York, where COMEX futures are delivered. When New York prices rise above London, it pays to fly metal into the US, and the flow reverses when the gap closes. Unrefined gold (doré) from mines in Latin America adds a steadier flow, sent to US refineries. Monthly figures can therefore jump by billions of dollars without any change in US demand.
What do the figures include?
HS code 7108: unwrought gold (bars, doré), semi-manufactured gold, gold powder, monetary gold. Coins, jewellery, scrap and ores are counted elsewhere. Exports include re-exports of foreign metal; imports are general imports (everything entering the US, including bonded warehouses). Values are in US dollars as declared, not adjusted for inflation.
How often is this updated?
Monthly. The Census Bureau publishes each month's trade figures about five weeks after the month ends, with the US international trade report, and revises the previous months. This page checks for new data every day.
