How gold is priced in Canada
Canadian bullion is priced in dollars per troy ounce; jewellers quote per gram, with 10K, 14K and 18K the common karats. The prices here are spot gold converted at today's USD/CAD rate.
No GST/HST on investment gold
Under the Excise Tax Act, gold bars, ingots, coins and wafers of at least 99.5% purity are "precious metal" and their sale is exempt from GST/HST. Coins below that purity, collector and modified coins, and jewellery are taxable at 5–15% depending on your province.
The Gold Maple Leaf
The Royal Canadian Mint's Gold Maple Leaf is one of the purest bullion coins in the world at 99.99% (with 99.999% special editions). The Mint, a federal Crown corporation, sold about 551,000 oz of gold bullion in 2025. Dealers sell Maples and bars at spot plus their own premium.
