China Gold Reserves: FAQ
How much gold does China have?
At the end of September 2026 the People's Bank of China reported 77.47 million troy ounces, about 2,410 tonnes, valued at $323.5 billion (about $314 billion at today's price). That is the official figure; many analysts think China's true gold holdings are larger, because some state buying is not reported as central-bank reserves.
Is China still buying gold?
Yes. The central bank has reported higher gold reserves every month since November 2024 (23 months in a row). The latest monthly addition was 23.0 tonnes in September 2026.
How much gold did China buy in 2026?
China's reported gold reserves rose by 103.3 tonnes in 2026 up to the end of September, according to the monthly official reserve figures.
How much gold did China buy in 2025?
China's reported gold reserves rose by 26.7 tonnes in 2025, according to the monthly official reserve figures.
When does China report its gold reserves?
The State Administration of Foreign Exchange publishes the month-end official reserve assets around the 7th of the following month. The next release is expected around 7 November 2026.
Why does China buy gold?
The central bank does not explain individual purchases. The reasons usually given are diversifying reserves away from the US dollar and Treasuries, protection against sanctions risk (after Russia's reserves were frozen in 2022), and support for the international use of the yuan. Official buying by China and other central banks has been one of the main supports for the gold price since 2022.
