Tax on Selling Gold in Turkey

Turkish income tax law doesn't list gold among the assets whose sale gains are taxable, so an individual who sells physical gold or gold held in a bank gold account pays no income tax on the gain, unless they trade gold as a business. Since 17 March 2025, buying gold in a bank account without physical delivery carries 0.2% BSMV, and gold funds are taxed by withholding.

How gold gains are taxed

  • Article 80 of the Income Tax Law (GVK) lists the assets whose sale gains are taxable for individuals, such as securities and real estate sold within five years. The list is closed and gold isn't on it, so gains on physical gold and on gold bought through a bank aren't taxable value-increase gains.
  • If you buy and sell gold regularly or as part of a business, the profit is commercial income and must be declared.
  • BSMV: Presidential Decision 9595 (Official Gazette 15 March 2025, in force 17 March 2025) made purchases in bank precious-metal accounts without physical delivery foreign-exchange transactions, so banks charge 0.2% BSMV on the purchase.
  • Gold funds and gold ETFs are taxed by withholding when you redeem: 17.5% for units bought from 9 July 2025, with lower rates for earlier purchases.
  • Delivery of gold bullion is exempt from VAT (KDV).
  • Silver: physical silver is treated the same way, and the BSMV rule covers precious-metal accounts generally.
  • No new tax on gold sales had been enacted by October 2026.

Reporting

  • No return is needed for a private sale of physical gold or gold from a bank account.
  • Banks collect BSMV at purchase, and fund withholding is final, so fund gains don't go on an annual return.

Losses

  • As private gold gains aren't taxed, losses on them can't be used.
  • A gold trader's losses are business losses under the commercial income rules.
