How gold is priced in Peru
Peruvian jewellers price gold per gram, with 18K the usual grade for jewellery and 24K for bars; mining and export prices are set per ounce. The figures here are the international spot price converted at today's USD/PEN rate — the metal value before IGV, workmanship and the dealer's margin.
IGV: unwrought gold exempt, jewellery 18%
Gold in powder and unwrought forms (tariff lines 7108.11 and 7108.12) is listed in Appendix I of the IGV law and is exempt from IGV; Law 32542 extended Appendix I to 31 December 2028. Semi-manufactured gold is taxed, and SUNAT's withholding system (detracciones) applies to gold sales at 10% for taxed gold and 1.5% for exempt gold. Jewellery carries the full 18% IGV (16% IGV plus 2% municipal tax).
Who sets the local price
Peru is one of the world's major gold producers, but its price is the international price converted at the sol exchange rate. Unlike some central banks in the region, the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú does not buy gold from small miners; the Ministry of Energy and Mines said in March 2025 that no such scheme had been proposed. Informal miners can keep working under the REINFO formalisation register, which Congress extended to 31 December 2026 or until a new small-scale mining law takes effect.
Buying tips
Ask for the karat and weight on the receipt (boleta or factura) with IGV shown, and compare the gram price with the 18K figure on this page. For bars, buy from established dealers who can show the refiner's stamp and certificate, and check the buy-back terms.
