How gold is priced in Japan
Japanese gold is priced in yen per gram, and dealers quote prices including 10% consumption tax. The first row above is the spot value converted at today's USD/JPY rate; the "incl. 10% tax" row shows the comparable tax-inclusive figure.
Consumption tax on gold
Buyers pay 10% consumption tax on gold, and — unusually — sellers also receive a tax-inclusive price when a dealer buys their gold back. Gold imports pay consumption tax at the border, and the gap has made gold smuggling a persistent problem that customs has repeatedly cracked down on.
Dealer prices
Tanaka Kikinzoku publishes the benchmark daily retail and buyback prices, both including tax; other major dealers include Mitsubishi Materials and Tokuriki. Retail prices set a series of records in 2025 and 2026. Small bars can carry extra fabrication fees, and heavy demand led Tanaka to suspend sales of its smallest bars at its own stores in late 2025.
Traditional units
The traditional monme (3.75 g) is still occasionally used; jewellery is usually K18 (750) or K24.
