The World's Largest Gold Mines

Muruntau in Uzbekistan is almost certainly the world's largest gold mine, at an estimated 2.50 Moz a year. Next come Grasberg (Indonesia, 1.86 Moz in 2024) and Olimpiada (Russia, 1.48 Moz in 2024). The 10 largest produce about 9% of the world's mined gold (3,300 tonnes in 2025, USGS); most of the rest comes from thousands of smaller mines and small-scale miners.

What makes a mine "large"

Big gold mines are usually huge, low-grade deposits mined at scale: open pits like Muruntau, Boddington and Detour Lake move tens of millions of tonnes of rock a year at grades of around one gram of gold per tonne. Others are copper mines where gold is a by-product (Grasberg, Batu Hijau, Cadia, Oyu Tolgoi), and their gold output swings with the copper mine plan.

Several "mines" in the list are complexes of pits and underground mines that share processing plants, such as Carlin and Cortez in Nevada, run by Barrick and Newmont's Nevada Gold Mines venture.

Largest Gold Mines: FAQ

What is the largest gold mine in the world?

Muruntau in Uzbekistan, a huge open pit in the Kyzylkum desert, produces an estimated 2.3–2.7 million ounces a year; its state owner does not publish output by mine. Among mines with published figures, Grasberg (Indonesia, 1.86 Moz) was the biggest in recent years.

Which country has the most large gold mines?

In our list of the 37 largest: Australia (5), United States (4), Canada (4), Russia (3). For total production by country, see gold production by country.

How much gold does the largest mine produce?

About 2.50 Moz a year (estimate), roughly 2.4% of world mine production. At the 2025 average price of $3,466 an ounce that is worth about $8.7bn.

Why do the rankings differ between sources?

Companies report differently: some give their own share, others the whole mine; some count "gold-equivalent" ounces or financial years; complexes of several pits are counted as one mine by some and split by others. Output also jumps from year to year (strikes, accidents, new ore zones). We show the whole mine (100%) wherever possible and rank by the higher of 2024 and 2025, so a mine hit by a one-off disruption still appears.

Where do these figures come from?

From each operator's production report, annual report or regulatory filing, linked in the table. Mines in China and Russia publish little mine-level data, so a few large ones may be missing.

Sources: company production reports, annual reports and regulatory filings, linked for each mine (researched November 2026); world production: U.S. Geological Survey, Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. Locations are approximate (to about 10 km). Shares and rankings are Corgano's calculations. Map outlines: Natural Earth.
