How the price is worked out

  1. Net gold weight = gross weight − stone weight.
  2. Gold value = net weight × the gold rate for the karat (24K = 100.0%, 22K = 91.6%, 18K = 75.0%, 14K = 58.5%, 10K = 41.7% of the 24K rate).
  3. Making charges as a percentage of the gold value, per gram, or a fixed amount.
  4. Stones are charged separately — never at the gold rate.
  5. IVA at your local rate on the total. IVA is 16% in most of Mexico; registered sellers in the northern and southern border regions can charge 8% under a tax decree in force until 31 December 2026.

When you sell jewellery back, shops pay for the gold content only — usually at a discount to the day's rate — so making charges and IVA are not recovered. Plain, high-karat pieces and bullion coins lose the least.

Gold Jewellery Price in Mexico: FAQ

How is the price of gold jewellery calculated in Mexico?

Jewellers sell finished pieces at a set price, and some quote plain gold by the gram for each karat, with labour and their margin built into that price. Either way the price covers the gold content (weight × the gold price for its karat), labour and markup, plus IVA. In this calculator, "making charges" stand for labour and markup together: enter your jeweller's quote, or the difference between the price and the metal value.

What is today's 14K gold rate in Mexico?

About $1,408.66 per gram for 14K and $2,407.97 per gram for 24K, as of Oct 23, 2026, 21:00 UTC (international price in Mexican pesos). The calculator starts with these rates; replace them with your jeweller's rate if it differs.

What marks should gold jewellery have in Mexico?

The official standard NOM-033-1-SE-2020, which replaced NOM-033-SCFI-1994 in June 2022, sets 10K as the minimum for gold articles, with a tolerance of 3 thousandths. Each piece should be marked, where its size allows, with its karat (for example 10K, 14K or 18K) or fineness in thousandths, an identification of the maker or importer, and the country of origin; otherwise the information goes on a tag. Profeco and the Ministry of Economy's standards office enforce it, and you can complain to Profeco if a piece is not as described.

Is there IVA on gold jewellery in Mexico?

Yes. Retail sales of jewellery to the public carry IVA at 16%, or 8% from registered sellers in the northern and southern border regions while the border tax decree is in force. The IVA law's 0% rate for gold and jewellery with at least 80% gold applies only when the sale is not a retail sale to the general public, and its exemption for gold bars of at least 99% purity covers bars sold at retail, not jewellery. Gold and silver coins that are or were legal tender, and troy-ounce pieces, are also exempt.

How much will I get if I sell gold jewellery?

Buyers pay for the gold content only (weight × purity × the gold price) and usually offer less than its full melt value to cover testing, refining and their margin. The labour, design and markup you paid are not recovered. Ask for the karat to be checked and the piece weighed in front of you, and compare offers from several buyers.
