History of Gold in the Netherlands

The Dutch Republic's silver lion daalder of 1575 was a famous trade coin whose name helped give the world the word 'dollar', and Dutch silver guilders circulated until rising silver prices forced a switch to nickel in 1967. De Nederlandsche Bank built up large gold reserves after the war, peaking at about 1,704 tonnes in 1978, then sold 1,100 tonnes between 1992 and 2008, leaving 612.5 tonnes. In 2014 it quietly brought 122.5 tonnes home from New York.
