How the date is set
Federal income tax returns are due on 15 April, and the same day is the last day to make IRA contributions for the previous year (an extension to file does not extend it). When 15 April falls on a weekend or on Emancipation Day, a Washington DC holiday on 16 April, the deadline moves to the next business day. The IRS postponed it to 15 July in 2020 and 17 May in 2021 because of the pandemic, and by one day in 2018 after a systems outage. Disaster areas and some states can have later dates.
Many Americans make the previous year's IRA contribution in the weeks before tax day, once they know their income. That is a calendar habit of savers, not something that moves the world price of gold, which is set in London, New York and Shanghai. For how gold has done in the deadline's month: Gold in April.
