Gold Allowance for Travellers to and from Oman (2026)
Oman sets no weight limit on gold for travellers. Since 3 August 2026, personal effects and gifts are duty-free up to OMR 300 in total if they are personal, non-commercial and you are not a frequent traveller; above that, customs duty (generally 5%) and 5% VAT apply. Everyone arriving, leaving or in transit must declare cash, bearer instruments, precious metals and gemstones worth OMR 6,000 or more in total, online in advance or at the checkpoint, and not declaring can bring up to three years in prison and a fine of up to OMR 10,000. Investment gold of 99% purity or more is zero-rated for VAT. These are the rules as of October 2026; check with Oman Customs before you travel.

Estimate only: duty and VAT apply to the value above OMR 300; customs values goods from your receipts or its own valuation. An estimate, not a customs assessment.

Duty on gold brought into Oman
Royal Oman Police Decision No. 110/2026, in force since 3 August 2026, sets the traveller exemption under the GCC Common Customs Law: personal effects and gifts are duty-free if their value does not exceed OMR 300, they are personal and in non-commercial quantities, and you are not a frequent visitor to customs or a trader in the goods. Oman Customs describes the OMR 300 as the combined value of personal effects and gifts. Above it, the GCC common tariff applies, generally 5%, and 5% VAT is charged on imports and on gold and silver jewellery.
Oman's VAT Law zero-rates investment gold, silver and platinum of at least 99% purity that is tradable on global bullion markets, and imports of zero-rated goods are exempt from import VAT. We could not confirm the customs duty rate on gold bars carried by travellers.
Declaring gold: the OMR 6,000 rule
Under Article 53 of the Law on Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing (Royal Decree No. 30/2016), everyone arriving, leaving or in transit must declare cash, bearer negotiable instruments and securities, and precious metals and gemstones worth OMR 6,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies. Gold counts as a precious metal. You can declare in advance through the electronic cash declaration linked from the Oman Customs website, or at the checkpoint, in writing, verbally or by using the Red Channel. Customs may ask for ID and proof of the source of funds.
Failing to declare or declaring falsely is a criminal offence under Article 98 of the law: up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to OMR 10,000 for individuals.
Taking gold out of Oman
Oman publishes no weight limit on gold you take out for personal use, but the OMR 6,000 declaration applies on departure and covers gold with your cash. Keep the invoices from the Omani jeweller showing weight, karat and price. Oman's VAT Law provides for VAT refunds to tourists, but in February 2026 the Tax Authority said the service would start only after costs and refund percentages were agreed with operators, and we found no confirmation that it has launched.
Oman to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
On the Omani side, declare if your gold, other precious metals and cash reach OMR 6,000. On arrival, the destination's baggage rules decide what is duty-free. India gives eligible passengers a jewellery allowance by weight and value and charges duty on more, and on bars and coins; Indian customs has caught passengers from Muscat with undeclared gold. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka each limit duty-free jewellery and charge duty on more.
Practical tips
Buy from established jewellers and keep the VAT invoice. Carry gold in your hand luggage, and never carry gold for someone else. Gold sent by post or courier is a parcel, not baggage: since August 2026 personal parcels are duty-free only up to OMR 100. Rules change, so check with Oman Customs before you travel.
