Gold Allowance for Travellers to and from Bahrain (2026)

Bahrain sets no weight limit on gold for travellers. Personal goods and gifts are duty-free up to BD 300 if they are for personal, non-commercial use; above that, goods from outside the GCC generally pay 5% customs duty plus 10% VAT. Customs or security officers may ask anyone arriving or leaving to declare the cash, gold and negotiable instruments they carry and to prove where they came from, and undisclosed money is confiscated; Bahrain Customs publishes no amount threshold. Investment gold of 99% purity or more that is certified in Bahrain is zero-rated for VAT. These are the rules as of October 2026; check with Bahrain Customs before you travel.

Duty and VAT on gold brought into Bahrain

Bahrain Customs exempts personal effects and gifts that travel with you from customs duty if they are for personal, non-commercial use and worth no more than BD 300. Travellers who regularly bring in goods do not qualify. Goods above BD 300 must be declared at the Red Channel. Goods from outside the GCC generally pay 5% customs duty, and Bahrain charges 10% VAT (since 1 January 2022) on imports and on gold and silver jewellery, including making charges. The goods covered by the traveller exemption are also exempt from import VAT.

Article 53(8) of the VAT Law zero-rates the supply or import of investment gold, silver and platinum of at least 99% purity that is tradable on the global bullion market and backed by a certificate from Bahrain's authority for testing precious metals and stones. Jewellery and gold below 99% pay 10% VAT. We could not confirm the customs duty rate on gold bars carried by travellers.

Declaring gold in Bahrain

Bahrain uses a disclosure system. Under the anti-money-laundering law (Decree-Law No. 4 of 2001 as amended by Law No. 54 of 2006), customs or security officers may ask anyone arriving or leaving to declare the value of local or foreign currency, gold or other negotiable instruments they carry, and to prove the source of the funds. A 2018 Finance Minister decision made it mandatory for travellers to declare cash on entry and exit, and undisclosed money is confiscated; suspected money laundering is referred to the authorities. Bahrain Customs publishes no amount threshold, and third-party sites that quote one disagree, so answer truthfully if asked and declare large amounts of gold.

Taking gold out of Bahrain

Bahrain publishes no weight limit on gold you take out for personal use, but officers may ask you to declare it and prove where it came from, so keep the invoices. Visitors aged 18 or over who are not resident in Bahrain or another implementing state can reclaim VAT through the Tax Free Shopping scheme run by Planet, on purchases of at least BHD 100 tagged in the shop on the day of purchase and validated at Bahrain International Airport or Khalifa Bin Salman Seaport within two months. Cash refunds are capped at BHD 500. Ask the jeweller whether it issues Planet tax-free forms; investment gold that is zero-rated carries no VAT to refund.

Bahrain to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

On the Bahraini side, keep invoices and be ready to declare. On arrival, the destination's baggage rules decide what is duty-free. India gives eligible passengers a jewellery allowance by weight and value and charges duty on more, and on bars and coins. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka each limit duty-free jewellery and charge duty on more. See the destination page for the current figures.

Practical tips

Buy from established jewellers and keep the VAT invoice, and for investment gold the purity certificate. Carry gold in your hand luggage. Do not hide gold or carry it for others: in 2020 airport police stopped eight travellers trying to take 16 hidden gold bars out of Bahrain and referred them to the Public Prosecution. Rules change, so check with Bahrain Customs before you travel.
