Gold Allowance for Travellers to and from Jordan (2026)

Jordan sets no published weight limit on gold jewellery for travellers. Personal luggage and gifts with no commercial character are duty-free up to JOD 200. Arriving passengers must declare cash, negotiable instruments, precious stones and precious metals worth more than JOD 10,000 on the Cross Border Declaration Form, and cash and bearer instruments above JOD 10,000 must also be declared on departure. Gold brought in beyond personal use is declared in the red lane, weighed and held, and must be tested and stamped by the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization before release. Gold jewellery and silver are exempt from Jordan's 16% sales tax. These are the rules as of October 2026; check with Jordan Customs before you travel.

Duty and tax on gold brought into Jordan

Jordan Customs lets arriving passengers bring personal luggage and personal gifts with no commercial character up to JOD 200 free of duty. If the goods are worth more than JOD 2,000, customs prepares a passenger baggage statement and collects duties and taxes. Jordan Customs publishes no separate allowance for gold jewellery you own and wear, and we could not confirm the customs duty rate on gold jewellery, bars or coins brought by travellers.

Jordan's general sales tax is 16%, but the Income and Sales Tax Department's schedule of exempt goods lists gold jewellery, semi-worked gold, silver in all forms, coins and goldsmithing services as exempt. Gold that customs treats as more than personal use goes through a separate procedure: declared in the red lane, weighed and held, cleared through a clearance company, and tested and stamped by the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO), which charges JOD 600 per kilogram of imported gold jewellery.

Declaring gold: the JOD 10,000 rule

Under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorist Financing Law No. 20 of 2021, travellers must declare cash and bearer negotiable instruments worth more than JOD 10,000 or the equivalent, on arrival and departure, and when sending them by post or freight. Jordan Customs says arriving passengers must declare cash, negotiable financial instruments, precious stones and precious metals above JOD 10,000 on the Cross Border Declaration Form. The threshold was JOD 15,000 until 2020.

Not declaring, or declaring falsely, brings legal liability: customs can seize undeclared cash and refer the case to the Public Prosecutor.

Taking gold out of Jordan

Jordan publishes no weight limit on gold you take out for personal use. Cash and bearer instruments above JOD 10,000 must be declared on departure; declare large amounts of gold too, and keep the jeweller's invoice showing weight, karat and price. Jordan has a tourist sales-tax refund scheme at airports and border crossings, but gold jewellery and silver are exempt from sales tax, so there is normally no tax on them to refund.

Jordan to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Egypt

On the Jordanian side, declare if your gold, other precious metals and cash are worth more than JOD 10,000, and keep the invoices. On arrival, the destination's rules decide what is duty-free. India gives eligible passengers a jewellery allowance by weight and value and charges duty on more, and on bars and coins. Pakistan and Bangladesh limit duty-free jewellery. Egypt charges customs duty on gold brought by travellers and asks for all gold to be declared on arrival.

Practical tips

Buy stamped gold from established jewellers and keep the invoices. Wear or hand-carry jewellery. Gold in commercial quantities goes through the trade procedure. Rules change, so check with Jordan Customs before you travel.
